New version of Triptivity

.
Petersberg, 28.05.2011 – The team of Triptivity is happy to anounce the new version of its travel portal.

Since the beginning of 2008 Triptivity offers a travel portal which offered a clear and easy to use design. From the start it offered features not found on other sites like the „radius“ search where a user can select a radius for the departure airport and the destination. The use of the colours blue and green made it distinctive from other travel portals. We received a lot of positive feedback.

Nevertheless we needed to change our background technologies in order to provide the user with even better results. With the use of new technologies we redesigned the user interface carefully. The colour selection is the same but it is even more easier to use, more responsive and much faster. We call the new version of Tripvitiy internally „Miyagi“ as we want to donate parts of our income to the Japanese Red Cross due to the earthquake and tsunami that happened in March.

Please feel free to send us your feedback via www.triptivity.com/contact If you provide us with your email address will keep in touch.

About …

… Us

Triptivity are Thorsten Krebs and Marc Christopher Schmidt. We started back in 2008 with our travel portal. Mainly we do it for the fun of it – but of course we want to keep in touch with programming. And hey, let’s be honest – isn’t it cool to create a travel portal?

… Travelfusion

Travelfusion is our travel content provider, located in London. Established in the late 1990′s they have a robust and fast XML api for flights, cars and hotels. The team is very supportive and we enjoy working together. As London is not to far away from Cologne, we meet from time to time and build up some kind of friendship. You can find them under www.travelfusion.com.

… Technologies used

Well, we whole bunch of technologies for running the site. Here we are going to name a few.

Play Framework! – Developing

The basis of our travel portal is build with the Play Framework! It is based on Java and you might say that this frameworks incorporates „best of Java technologies“ like Groovy or Hibernate. There are many thing to like about the framework. For example it supports background jobs out of the box or that you can start to develop Play apps straight away – no need for additional software like a database or web server. The package comes with everything included. And yes – this framework is open source. You can find this framework under www.playframework.org.

Hosteurope – Internet hosting

To run our servers, we us Hosteurope, located in Cologne. They have an excellent service and an extremely fast internet connection. We decided to use them as they have a relatively new data center which was build very energy efficient. You can reach them under Website CO2 neutral hosted by Host Europe.

Bitbucket – Issue management

For issue-management, wiki and code hosting we use Bitbucket. Their code hosting is build upon Mercurial which comparable to Git. The service they provide is simple but efficient and can be well integrated with your development environment – which was important for us. You can find this service under bitbucket.org

Play Font

Again „Play“??? This time it is not about the framework but about the font we use for Triptivity. The selection of a font is important for your web site. It should be clear, very readable and different to stand out against other web sites.We decided to use the Play font from the danish designer Jonas Hecksher. He has many more fonts on his web site www.playtype.com. The font comes in different variants and gives our travel portal a unic appearance. As we use the Google web font service, Triptivity will look identical on any computer. You can find the font under www.google.com/webfonts/family?family=Play&subset=latin.

The new three column layout

The three column page layout of the current portal triptivity.com is a bit clumsy. Ok, the header and footer is straightforward, but the content is not made in the best way. The left and center column are together in a div which is not really elegant.

The old way

<body>
<div id="page">
   <div id="page_header"/>
   <div id="page_left_and_center">
     <div id="page_center"/>
     <div id="page_left"/>
   </div>
   <div id="page_right"/>
   <div id="page_footer">
</div>
</body>

With the redesign of Triptivity I wanted to find a cleaner, better way of arranging the html code. In the shallows of the internet I searched and found „the holy grail“ of three columns. Matthew Levine wrote in detail how to setup a perfect three column layout which can be used in all current browsers (www.alistapart.com/articles/holygrail/). As he explained everything with nice graphics from Kevin Cornell I won’t repeat it here and just show the result….

The new way

<body>
<div id="page">
   <div id="page_header"/>
   <div id="page_content"/>
     <div id="page_content_center_column"/>
     <div id="page_content_left_column"/>
     <div id="page_content_right_column"/>
   </div>
   <div id="page_footer"/>
</div>
</body>

And the corresponding css part:

body {
margin: auto; /* no margin, center */
width: 980px; /* width of page */
}

#page {
padding: 0 210px 0 210px; /* right fullwidth; left fullwidth; */
}

#page_content {
margin: -.5em 0 0 0;
}

#page_content_center_column {
float: left;
padding: 0;
position: relative;
width: 560px; /* width of center */
}

#page_content_left_column {
float: left;
margin: 0 0 0 -100%;
padding: 0;
position: relative;
right: 200px;
width: 200px;
}

#page_content_right_column {
float: left;
margin: 0 -100% 0 0;
padding: 0;
position: relative;
width: 200px;
}

#page_footer {
clear: both;
}

#page_footer,
#page_header {
margin: 0 -200px 0 -200px; /* right width; left width */
padding: 12px 0 0 0;
}

The code can be downloaded from the ZIP-File

Back in August I wrote the coming new design of Triptivity called „Canberra“. It was still an early release and still an unfinished mockup. I want to thank everybody who gave us comments (via WordPress or mail). They were useful to us and showed us, that we are on the right track. Today I would like to present the latest version which shows better how the design will be. Beside a screenshot we will provide a zip file where we included html, css and images. So you if you are interested in how we build it, you can download it onto your computer.
Within the next days and weeks we are going to talk about certain aspects about the design. Like how to setup a menu like Apple, how to efficiently implement a three column layout and other aspects. Of course we will reference on web sites which we found useful.
Please feel free to give comments. And if you have ideas how to implement it better – just get in touch with us! We hope that you like it as much as we do.

Die Shows

The journey is at the beginning

Before the visitor can employ his stay in England he has to take the plane from Cologne (which of course you can book through our travel portal www.triptivity.com). Hold it! Not this time – despite the fact that the author up to now always made use of an aeroplane, this time he decided to take the train. And, you won’t believe this, the journey from Bonn to the center of London took only five hours. Considering the extra time which you need when using the plane the journey by train is just as fast. The cost for the train is € 120 (when you book early it cost’s only € 100).

A visit to the British Museum

The British Museum is a „must“. You should visit it on a rainy day, as you know there are quite a few of them. During our visit we „worked“ ourselves through the ground floor. Everything else has to wait until next time. By the way the „Rosetta Stone“ can be seen twice. There is a small copy which you can touch – the original is behind glass. And something else about this museum. You might get the feeling that you are either in Egypt or in Greece. This has to do with the fact that everything that could be carried was transferred from the countries to England. It goes without saying that this still leads to intercultural problems with those specific countries.

A visit to Buckingham Palace

The highlight of our visit was definitely our visit to Buckingham Palace. During summer time when the queen doesn’t stay at her palace it is open to the public. The visitors are guided through 19 state rooms via audio guide (even in Japanese available). Though 19 rooms seem very few considering the fact there are 775 rooms in this palace it is exciting to walk through them. The queen uses them for official receptions and festivities. One of the rooms is the throne hall. Unfortunately it is not allowed to take photos. However, you can use your camera as soon as your visit of the rooms ends in the garden of the queen. It is recommendable to make use of the posibility to take a cup of tea and some very English cake. The same agency which does the catering for the queen’s garden parties offers this afternoon tea. Finally I would like to suggest a „powder room“ before you start your visit to the palace. The tour takes about 1.5 hours and there are only facilities provided at the end.

One or more visits

Of course there are lots of other points of interest in London. We enjoyed long walks along the Themse and had a rest in St. James Park. Not far from Westminster bridge towards the London Eye you can find a very nice restaurant „Giraffe“. We also recommended a visit to one 10,000 musicals. It is worth while! Not only that you can get a seat for a very resonable price; it is fun to listen to the original version (no translation). By the way we got a ticket for Lion King on one of the balconies. Not only was it a bargain, since we couldn’t see 1/5 of the stage, but we had the balcony for ourselves. Other than that we had a super view and in no case we would have wanted to exchange our seats. The tickets we bought at the ticket office of this musical. If you buy tickets at one of the hundreds ticket office around Leicester Square you might get spoiled. The only official ticket office to get better prices is the one directly on Leicester Square.

Shopping

Due to the current exchange rate England has become a paradise for shoppers. There are a lot of shops on Oxford Street. However, those who prefer to find everything in one roof can go to the Shopping Mall „Westfield“ located in Kensington. It has over 300 hundred shops (also an Apple store). We can also highly recommend „Mark’s and Spencer’s“ for food. This food stores a a little bit more expensiv but it is 1st class quality. Don’t be surprised when you enter that store and find clothing of any kind as this company offers both, food and clothing. On some train station you will find this store offering only food. Talking about clothing, you will alsofind H&M. When you look for something just as reasonable but of higher quality we recommend the company UNIQLO. It’s a Japanese brand and really really good!

Last but not least

If in case you want to discover more about Britain instead of just staying in London we recommend to make use of the British Railway. But you must know that there are different providers offering the rail services. This makes it a bit more difficult when using the interent. First you search on the main page which passes you on to all the different providers. Ok, it would be easier to go directly to the counter and buy your tickets their. However, you can safe up to 50% when buying tickets about three weeks ahead.

See you in England!
